Alliance Francaise in Accra was not only a place where you could learn the French Language. It was an establishment that also promoted culture and music. On this special day, Feb 19th 2005 I believe, they held a concert in celebration of African American Heritage Month, and hosted the best local, national and international artists. There was a huge range of artists at the event. Unfortunately, I did'nt keep a record of the names of all the artists. However, there was a good mix of traditional, and modern African music. One of the first acts, was a Jazz saxophonist, with a great backing band. There was also great drummers, playing traditional style drums. There were other vocalists and bands there too, all them sticking to the theme of a bright future for Africa. It was nice to know that I wasn't the only person there taking pictures, however, it would have been nice if this guy didn't get in my shot.
And of course, you can't have African Music without traditional African dancing.
Looking back on it, it seems a bit strange that African American Heritage Month was being celebrated at Alliance Francais in Ghana. I kinda understand how it could work. Ok African American...and Ghana is in Africa, so that's cool. But, African American Heritage Month is more of an American Holiday. To my recollection, it wasn't really recognized in Ghana. Also, were did the French angle come in? I guess they just wanted an excuse to get some great music together, not that you should really need one. Whatever the case, it was a great concert. The music, the atmosphere, the crowd, the experience, everything was great.
