Free Drink Free Viking

In honor of the special day that it is, I give you this special offer. The first person to give me the princely sum of 2000 Japanese Yen (about £10 or $20) shall receive not only a free drink, but also a free Viking, all the way from the 9th century...

Drink Viking

Ok, so I'm not giving away drinks or vikings, but this is a real sign I saw at the entrance of a bar in Takaoka, Japan. The free viking bit was actually refering to an all you can eat buffet. No idea why they chose to use the word viking. But I would prefer to think that you could actually get a whole Viking, from the 9th century for 2000 yen. Much better value for money if you ask me. You should get two free drinks though. One for you, and one for the Viking.

And just incase you are asking how it's free if you're paying 2000¥, well that money (2500¥ on the door) was the entrance fee. Still a bargain though.

Viking refers to viking-style or eat-like-a-viking. In the U.S. and Europe it is
often referred to smorgasboard, which I believe has some viking connection. Who
knows, maybe not.

The viking connection is indeed smorgasboard, via the Swedish, who once upon a
time were proud vikings.

Smorgasboard is more correctly written smörgåsbord,
and is a Swedish word. The literal meaning is "sandwich table". It means
a buffet table with a large number of different dishes, and you choose what you
want, and can eat as much as you like.

Swedish companies like to take their
employees out for a christmas smörgåsbord in December.

Thanks for that Billywest. Not heard of it myself, but seems like it makes
sense.
