So, I'm on my way to meet up with a group of JET friends on a Sunday night in July 04. I come down the train station stairs to catch my train and I hear the amazing sound of Mr Pedal Steel Man... I had heard that particular sound before, and managed to pinpoint it to country music, but had never heard it live. It sounded amazing, like a really versatile guitar, which it was.
It can be described as being a 12 sting guitar neck attached to a table, with pedals (made of steel I guess), which help to bend the notes. It looked amazing, and the sound was mesmerizing. I stuck around for about an hour or so, taking pictures and filming it on my camera phone, and just loving the music. He was pretty good. He seemed a really nice guy, and was kind kind enough to explain what it was, and how it worked. He even said I could have a go. I refused, as I was scared I would break it. In hindsight, it was a stupid decision, as I have no idea when that opportunity to play a pedal steel will present itself again.
Anyway, it was great experience, and chilling out at Toyama train station, where I missed my train twice listening to Mr Pedal Steel Man was well worth it. You can check out details on pedal steels at Wikipedia. Other Japan Articles
