Takaoka, the second largest city in Toyama prefecture boasts many festivals. 御車山 (Mikurumayama or special cart festival) is one of them. This is just one of the many displays of Japanese tradition that I experience during my time in Takaoka city. Seven or so HUGE floats, being pushed and pulled by locals in traditional kimono type dress. The floats were decorated with flowers, gold, and ornaments, and they would carry several people on top. Apparently, they were built 390 years ago, by a Japanese general when Takaoka Castle was built. They were built in honour of the people of Takaoka, and were paraded around the city. There's not much else to say about it really, apart from the fact that it was enjoyed by all the people of Takaoka. Every now and then the float would stop outside someones house, I guess to honour that person for something (I dont know what), but that seemed pretty cool. They even had a little baby float for the kids to carry too. They seemed to be on a totally different route from the others though.
