金閣寺 (Kinkakuji), The spectacular Golden Temple in Kyoto, Japan. The Golden Temple formally known as 鹿苑寺 (Rokuon-ji, Deer Garden Temple) was first built in 1397 for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and has been preserved until today. It suffered damage during the Ōnin War which lasted from 1467 to 1477, and also suffered an attack from a mentally disturbed Korean monk in 1950 who managed to burn down the pavillion. The temple is covered with pure gold leaf, and on the roof sits a golden pheonix. The temple is surrounded by beautiful greenary, which changes dramatically depending on the season. In that autumn, the temple seems to be surrounded by the fiery red and orange leaves of the trees, while during winter the temple stands out like a golden mirage against the white snowy backdrop.
Kyoto, a beautiful city, The Golden Temple, a spectacular site, well worth seeing twice.
