House of Hung Jewellers

I'm strolling around Singapore, doing a bit of sight seeing, a bit of shopping, minding my own business. I come across this shop. "Wow", I say to myself "80% Discount? They must be well hung"...

EnlglifiedI decided to go to Singapore, to visit a close friend of mine for my Christmas holiday (2003) while I was living in Japan. It was great. Living in Japan, and being away from England made me a little homesick. But as Singapore was so Englified (notice the shops on the right), it was like being right at home. Imagine my surprise then, when I saw the name of the jewellery store. It kinda hit home that, this wasn't home. Maybe "hung" didn't quite have the same connotation in Singapore as it did back home. Maybe it did? Either way, I didn't think it would be in my best interests to ask the other passers by, who didn't seem to be as amused as I was. Ah well. I just hope it wasn't a closing down sale. That would be a crying shame. You'd have no where to "hang" your jewellery! (Pun fully intended).

Funny that when you're Chinese you don't think too much of a word like Hung (Red
in Cantonese) which actually even sounds auspicious :-). They do have eternal
sales which do not inspire confidence if you ask me. And yes, they've been there
forever and still are the last time I was in Singapore (Jan 08).

haha that was an interesting read. just stumbled upon your article, although i'm
1 year late. My father owns House of Hung, and "Hung" is actually our
sirname=)

We usually put our sales few months prior and after the great
singapore sales, an earlier start and later end. I've heard many stories about
the word "Hung" in America, was pretty funny.
