Cassette

Dear Compact Cassette, Cassette Tape, Dear Cassy,
We’ve been through a whole lot, you and me.
You’ve been with me through good times and bad,
Which is why writing this makes me so sad.
See, I’ve been thinking of telling you this for a while,
But so many people think you’re out of style.
I’m holding on to the memories, the times that we’ve been through.
This is my tribute, my ode to you...

I remember back in the days of the C64,
When people loaded games from tape (that was raw).
We would put you in the player, hit play and then chill,
Or do homework, watch TV, there was time to kill.
We could come back after the squeaking and the high pitched noise was done,
Then turn you over and go back out and have fun.
Only when we had waited for half and hour or so
Could we start up the game and have a go.

Alas people moved on to cartridges and stuff,
And left you in the lurch which was kinda rough.
But you were still king in the music world.
The number one choice for boy or girl.
You were small, you were strong, you were cool you were slick.
We could fast forward, rewind, copy, share and …stuff.
Everyone had walkmans, and mix-tapes to play.
Was like you were invincible, you were here to stay.

Walkmans came in different sizes and shapes,
Thin ones, fat one, Smurfs and apes.
It was cool when you wouldn’t have to turn you over,
'Cos the deck had an automatic change-over.
When we wanted to rewind and the battery was low,
Spinning you around a pen was the only way to go.
When the tape got chewed and tangled or cut,
A fix could come with precision, Sellotape and luck.
CD

When the CD came out, I didn’t think it was better.
It was like everyone was just out to get ya.
Couldn’t copy, got scratched, only 70 mins, lame.
But it started to take over, that was a shame.
After a while I just couldn’t resist.
No more forward or rewind to get through song lists.
When the writables came you ran out of luck.
And then the rewritable’s came, and then you were…screwed.

Then was the minidisk which didn’t last long.
But now theirs mp3 which are really going strong.
It’s all Ipod this, and Ipod that.
The young ones don’t remembers when you were phatt.
The industry dumped you, now you’re hard to be found.
But isn’t it funny how vinyl’s still around?
No more real mix-tapes for loved one or friend.
But it’s not over, it’s not the end

You’ve entered the new world of retro cool,
Where, you’re not just old, your old school,
Where people have t-shirts with pictures of you,
And Ipod cassette covers is a way to stay true,
Cassette wallets, and belts, and key rings and bags,
USB memory sticks, dresses, name-tags.
So, just wanted to tell you, I’ll never say never,
Whatever happens, in my heart you’ll live forever.
