From the 80's to the 90's way back to the 60's, from Tony! Toni! Tone! to Lucy Pearl to the live performance at Hollywood and Highlands, this was the way I saw it...

One of the great things about living in LA is having great music close-by, and great deals too. Thanks to Radio Free kjlh Raphael Saadiq was performing at Hollywood and Highlands for free on Sept 19th. It was the first time I had seen Saadiq live and the first time I heard any of his new stuff from his Album 'The Way I see it'.

It sounds strange saying this but when he came out, he seemed incredibly...well...normal. No superstar aura surrounded him, he just seemed normal, dressed up like a 60's Motown musician wearing a black suit, thin black tie, white shirt and thick rimmed black glasses.

However, he quickly turned from normal person to great performer. As it was free, I was expecting a few odd songs, say 3 or 4, but he kept it swinging for a good hour. It was a great performance. But from listening to his album, I did notice something about not just his tunes, but a few other artists in the late 2000's. Music had gone back to the 60's.

I guess it's true what people say, that music goes in cycles, and to me the return of the Motown sound to the mainstream started with Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black'. Let's forget about the fact that she went a bit crazy with drugs. Her album was off the hook, and the production seems to have influenced a whole lot of other artists, like Estelle, Jamie Lidell, Little Jackie, the list goes on. I'm not saying she was solely responsible for bringing back the 60's but the huge success of her album definitely helped push things along in that direction.

But hey, I'm not complaining. I wish I lived during the 60's. It's been near torture being subjected to some of the 80's and 90's music I've had to put up with.
