Chippy Chips

In my attempt to clear up whatever confusion there may be, I offer you this entry, in honour of the above CHIPS not fries.

Now I'm laying it down just so you all now. There's fries, and then there's chips. And "Chips is proper food, right!!', as Clive, a close friend of mine, once said in my presence.

See, the problem is there's too much of this:

and not enough of this

Chips

"But those fries up top look much better!" you may be saying to yourselves. Well, that's not the point. It should be more about substance, essence, style, presence.

I must call upon the workings of a literary genius who goes by the name of Panjandrum to help me explain. The following extract was taken from a forum at WordReference.com:

Re: Chips vs. fries

Proper British Chips are essentially potato, not like French Fries, which thanks to USfastfoodchains are thin fingers of crisp.

Real chips are made with real potatoes, peeled (badly) and cut into half-inch fingers then fried at least twice in beef dripping. They have a flavour that is a universe apart from French Fries. They should, of course, be wrapped in newspaper.

Eaten fresh, chips have a crisp outside that cracks open to reveal a steaming, starchy, glistening white inside. Eaten normally (soused in salt and vinegar and nestling in the newspaper) they rapidly develop a truly, uniquely, wonderfully greasy sogginess that must be experienced to be appreciated.

For preference, the experience should be on the long walk home with the young lady of your choice, late in the evening after a visit to the cinema.

You see comparing chips to fries is like comparing Miss Curvaceous over here to Olive Oil.

Popeye

Like comparing "Blue Chip" class food, with "small fries", literally. French fries aren't even French anyway.

So let's have less of this:

French Fries and more of this

All those who don't agree are entitled to their own opinion. However, I would like to recommend that you seek further guidance.

Note: Clive is a fictional character made up for the purpose of this explanation. Also, it has come to light that the test posted on the above "further guidance" link, may not be extensive, thus may not render accurate enough results. In this case please try here.

I am a big fan of Fries especially the ones in the Red Box, but once I see your
comparisons and eloquent argument I have to side with you and say that Chips are
better than Fries!

i think i prefer fast food which tastes all over the world the same e.g.
McDonald's

Even though McDonald's around the world all look the same, they definitely don't
taste the same. They taste similar, but not the same. Chicken burgers in the UK
are kinda ok, at least they used to be when I ate them, before I turned vegie.
However, it was the dollar chicken burger I had in New York, about 7 years ago,
which turned me vegie. It was disgusting.

Drinks are totally different. In the
US the sizes are much larger, and the drink is way more diluted than in the UK
and Japan.

You also find that when you go to different countries, they don't
even all have the same menus. Japan has a sweet potato pie thing, which is
nice. You can't find that in the UK or the USA. I've also had McDonald's in
France, Israel, and Germany and I don't remember seeing the sweet potato thing
in those countries either. What I do remember is there being menus specific to
the cuisine of the country.

McDonald's is a franchise, so they don't have to be
exactly the same. You will find that their restaurants (if you can call them
that) which are in the same country are more similar than independent chip shops
are form each other but their restaurants in different countries can be just as
different.

So if you want food that taste's the same where ever you go in the
world, you will probably have to cook yourself. :P

But you forgot to mention the jargon which Americans use and Britains do.

For
example, and I make no bones about this. I just hate the following Americanisms
:-

Babe,baby - - ugh
Lemme
Kinda
Gotta
Wanna
Huh ! - - big UGH !
'em -
Americans just cannot utter the object pronoun 'them'.
'im - ditto -
'him'.
chill out
super patriotism
dunno
betcha, you betcha !

You need not acknowledge, but it woul be nice if you do.
Incidently, I like
America and Americans.

It's true that fast-food chains have mass-marketed the McDonald's style fries,
but American diners across the country sell fries that look and taste exactly
like British chips. I'm pretty sure that all American fries looked like this
before McDonald's came along. I'm interested in when the name differed and why.
StellaDave  - Chips glorious chips |11-24-2009 11:33:20
You're completely right. Chips are not fries and vice versa. It's like Tea and
Coffee. The yanks down coffee by the bucketload. They just have never understood
tea. But as a Brit I can honestly say that Tea is the most glorious drug ever
discovered. You know that feeling when you're knackered and you sit down and
have a great cup of hot tea and every muscle in your body feels like it relaxing
at the same time and that long "Aaaaaaahhh" sound comes out of your
mouth. Coffee just isn't close. It's the same with chips. No one ever sits at
home and fancies some fries do they? But I could murder a bag of chips right
now. Proper food. Double fried. Get in.
