The Africa Cup of Nations is a few days behind us now, and looking back, it was a great event, filled with joy and a few disappointments. I'm writing this just to add closure to the other entry I wrote, and was actually gonna call this entry something else... I was actually gonna call it "Ghana: Too Little Too Late" after their failing to reach the final but winning third place, which is not much of a consolation prize. However News has just revealed that Ghana has now topped Africa in the most recent FIFA world rankings. Even though I'm Ghanaian myself, I will be the first to say that the standard of football (not soccer) played by the Black Stars was not impressive. Ghana barely beat Nigeria 2:1 in the quarter finals, and from the beginning of the semi-final game against Cameroon, they just didn't play well enough. To be honest it wasn't a surprise that they lost. What was a surprise however, was within the space of less than one month, Ghana had risen from 6th place to 1st place in the FIFA rankings for Africa.
Even though I don't consider third place in a football tournament a huge achievement, I must say that coming back from 2:0 down at half time to 4:2 up at the end was impressive, so well done Black Stars. I just hope that they qualify for the 2010 FIFA world Cup in South Africa, and keep up the pace all the way till the end.
