John Atta-Mills

"What was that? Elections happened in Africa? No fighting? No commotion? Democratic you say? In Africa? When?"

Yes, indeed. The changeover was last week, and there was hardly any coverage in Western mainstream media...

Nana Afufo-AddoAs soon as the elections in the USA were over, I immediately starting monitoring the Ghana websites to see what the situation was there. The two main parties, the then current ruling party the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and their biggest rival the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were battling it out for the presidential and parliamentary posts. Dec 7th Saw the NDC win narrowly on both counts, but too narrow for it to be a clear victory. The other parties that were in the game robbed either side of a clear majority. This lead to the Presidential runoffs a few weeks later on the 28th, which saw the opposition party the NDC take the winning spot thrusting John Evans Atta-Mills (above) to presidency, being the third democratically elected president beating the NPP candidate Nana Akufo-Addo (right).

Atta-Mills took over from John Agyekum Kufuor, who had been president for the last two terms, and had led Ghana through peaceful, safe and prosperous times. I only hope that this will continue under the leadership of Atta-Mill. Many feel that the NDC represents what Ghana had been, under the leadership of Rawlings in the 80's and 90's, which many saw as dictatorial and dangerous. So are understandably worried about their return to power. However I feel that things will be different from before, and much better.

Ghana is still seen as an example to the other African nations, I just hope Atta-Mills doesn't screw things up. Although, I'm sure that if he did, the Western Media would be all over it like kids in a candy store.
